What is dentofacial orthopedics?

Dentofacial orthopedics is not as well known as children’s orthodontics, and yet it is equal or more critical since it seeks to correct respiratory disorders that cause alterations in the shape of children’s faces and, more importantly, severe effects on their posture. Bodily changes can be translated into scoliosis, rotation of the hips, alteration of the length of the extremities and difficulties of the foot support.

What signs can help me recognize this problem?

The child with some respiratory obstruction -such as allergic rhinitis, deviation of the nasal septum, turbinate hypertrophy, presence of vegetations and tonsils- usually has marked dark circles, long face, nasal voice, mouth breathing or snoring. It can be complicated by otitis, sinusitis or bronchitis.

The face of the child is undergoing progressive changes in its shape – lack of transverse growth (narrow face), lack of cheekbones, and others – at first glance the narrow upper dental arch is observed, usually with dental crossbite, deep palate, delay in the eruption of the teeth and, in almost all cases, teeth crowded at very young ages

When can a facial orthopedic treatment be started?

Prematurely you can solve the problems associated with the child’s breathing. Between 4 and 8 years is the right time to perform the first stage of treatment. It is important to consider that all growth problems must be resolved in steps of the child’s growth, therefore do not wait for tooth replacement to intervene with the correction of malocclusion since, in an immense majority of children, a treatment early avoids malocclusions in the adolescent’s permanent dentition.

Why is it important to perform treatment early?

Taking into account that at 5 years old the face of the children has already completed 80% of its total growth, it is a priority to solve the respiratory obstructions to restore as soon as possible the balance of the child’s facial and postural growth. Further:

  • It promotes hygiene. The placed teeth are better cleaned and are less prone to tooth decay and gum problems.
  • Reduces the treatment time of the corrective orthodontic stage.
  • Improves the aesthetics and the self-esteem of the child
  • Reduces the possibility of impacted permanent teeth, which are those that can not wholly escape through the gum.

Orthognathic surgery maintains a close relationship with orthodontics. Thus, the correction of dento-cranio-maxillofacial deformities is always a teamwork between the orthodontist and the maxillofacial surgeon.

In the conventional treatment scheme, orthodontics-orthognathic surgery-orthodontics, the mission of presurgical orthodontics is to eliminate the existing dental compensations and provide the surgeon with a stable and adequate structure between the upper and lower arches to carry out the planned skeletal movements. On the other hand, postoperative orthodontics is essential to establish a proper final occlusion.

At Oralcorp® our maxillofacial surgeon is coordinated with our orthodontists meticulously. During the treatment of a case susceptible to orthognathic surgery, both professionals, maxillofacial surgeon, and orthodontist make sure to know the essential aspects of diagnosis and treatment. Besides, they must agree regarding the proposed treatment and the way it is carried out for the patient to accept it with full confidence.

Metallic orthodontics

These braces are made of metal, so they are not recommended for adults seeking aesthetics. The metal brackets correct problems of alignment and biting, which translates into a more harmonious smile.

Aesthetic orthodontics

These brackets are highly aesthetic and, precisely because of this characteristic, it is a very demanded treatment by adults. There are many advantages of these brackets, such as that they are translucent, do not stain unlike other porcelain, and also its clinical effectiveness is excellent.

Invisible orthodontics

This treatment consists of transparent splints -so aesthetic- that go practically unnoticed. It consists of invisible set aligners that are placed as discharge or retention splints. Each splint aims to perform a specific tooth movement. Its advantages are numerous: they are 100% aesthetic and comfortable, since they are removable, and also allow us to maintain perfect oral hygiene. They do not apply in all cases. Book your appointment, and we will indicate the ideal orthodontic type for you.

Self-ligating orthodontics

Self-ligating brackets are an orthodontic technique that uses devices that have a gate that traps a high-quality steel wire. No need for ligatures to carry it out. When closing the gate, the wire that surrounds the dental arch is trapped by the bracket and attached to the tooth.

Unlike other treatments, self-ligating brackets do not use external ligatures to join them with the arch in charge of exerting pressure on the teeth to bring them to their correct position. The bond between the brackets and the tensor arch is made by a mechanism that is incorporated into the bracket itself. There is no need for elastic or rubber. Orthodontic treatments last less since their anchoring system gives us faster movements of the teeth. They cause fewer sores and chafing on the soft tissues, making them very comfortable to wear.
